Brevard Art News - August 24, 2008

Brevard Art News...

New this Week
Opening Reception for the Harris Gallery at the Maxwell C. King Center. Save Thursday, September 4th, 2008, from 4 to 6pm. Come to the reception for the opening of Michael Shelton's one-man show called "Reflections and Expressions" in the Harris Gallery at the Maxwell C King Center for the Performing Arts. Michael will show some of his wonderful portraits and landscapes. The exhibit will hang throughout the month of September. If you don't make it to the opening reception, be sure to make a point to see the exhibit sometime during the month. In addition, this reception is the kick-off of the 2008-2009 Harris Art Gallery Season. All the artists who will be exhibiting in the coming season have been invited to the reception. So come and meet this group of wonderful artists and learn about the upcoming season of art. The King Center is located at the corner of Post and Wickham Roads in Melbourne.


CBAA Featured Artist: Helen Wheately is the featured artist for the Central Breavard Art Associations exhibit at the Central Brevard Library in Cocoa for September and October. She will be displaying five of her award-winning watercolor and mixed-media paintings in addition to several other pieces, including her latest work titled, "Birds of a Feather." The exhibit will run from August 28th through October 30th. The library is located at 308 Forest Avenue in Cocoa. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 to 9; Friday, 9 to 6; Saturday, 9 to 5; and Sunday, 1 to 5.

Fall for the Arts -- September 18th, 5:30 to 7:30, on Highland Avenue of EauGallie. Arts and cultural organizations are joining forces on September 18, 2008 to announce their upcoming events, seasons, and exhibitions at an outdoor party on Highland Avenue in Eau Gallie. Groups will present highlights of their upcoming seasons. Wander from group to group and collect schedules of upcoming events and enjoy food and drink offered at a minimal charge. The event is free and open to the public. Over 40 organizations are scheduled to participate.

Slides Going the Way of the Dinosaur: Slides for juried art shows and art program applications are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. DC Reproductions in India Harbour Beach can transfer existing slides or photograph artwork in true-color digital reproduction that can enhance visibility and sales. Dawn Currie is the president of DC Reproductions and as the daughter of a painter she recognizes that artists are dependent on the reporduction of their art work for selection. "The image must reflect the true color and tonal quality of the original artwork," she said.

Among the services DC Reproductions provides are archival prints for artist portfolios and digital files that adhere to today's call for entry requirements, including CaFE and ZAPP. The Art Gallery and Studio at 802 New Haven Avenue in Historic Downtown Melbourne announces the addition of artist Gloria Summerford. Her works in acrylic and her bright colorful abstract florals are a great addition to the Art Gallery and Studio. Be sure to stop by to see her work.

Also, don't forget that the featured artist for August is Nancy Gatti. You are invited to stop by and see her beautiful new oil painting exhibit, featuring over-sized panel work of "Pears," Ocean Views" and "Street Scenes of New York. Ongoing events...

Tune In: Bobbi Q. Brown and Viola Knudsen will be featured artists on the Focus TV program on Thursday August 28th at 6:30pm on cable channel 15. Brown is the featured artist at the Art and Antique Studio for September, so you can see her paintings there also. Knudsen shares the beauty of the world through painting and pine needle baskets. She is featured in the August issue of Senior Scene Magazine. Don't miss seeing these wonderful artists on TV.








Library Exhibit: The works of Rafael Picon and Jeanne Painter Johnson are featured at the Melbourne Library on Fee Avenue during the month of August. Be sure to drop by to see their works.

Opportunity: Jim Brown of Custom Woodworking Inc will help you display your artwork in houses that are for sale. People who are new to the area and are spending money on housing will have the opportunity to see your artwork. The artwork must be family friendly. There is a fee for this service, so call Jim at 321-749-2149 for details. Because Jim is a member of the Strawbridge Art League, he is offering art league members a 20% discount. However, you don't have to be a member of the Strawbridge Art League to participate.

Stay-cation Idea: Due to the high cost of gas, many people are vacationing within the state rather than traveling long distances. Here's an idea. Visit the 2nd Annual Downtown Naples Art and Craft Festival: Fifth Avenue South in Downtown Naples. Here's the scoop: The festival takes place on September 6 and 7, 2008. It takes place on one of the states most affluent streets. Fifth Avenue South is a beautiful setting for this annual craft festival.

Art and Antique Studio at 1419 Highland Avenue, Melbourne, Florida will offer the works of Bobbi Q. Brown for the month of September. The public is invited to the opening reception on September 5, from 5:30 to 8:30. Bobbi Q. Brown feels we are all born to create. She enjoys sharing her sense of wonder, joy and beauty in the world around us through art. She loves playing with all the various watercolors, different techniques and materials. She always dreamed of becoming an artist and took the leap in 1999 after 10 years as a commercial artist. She has appeared in shows and galleries across the country and she finds the local flora and fauna an awesome inspiration. She inspires others by teaching privately and in a classroom setting. Don't miss her exhibit From Mangos to Manatees -- The Colors of Florida. The exhibit will be at the Art and Antique Studio throughout September.

Fifth Avenue Art Gallery at 1470 Highland Avenue, Melbourne, Florida announces its 3rd Annual 100% Pure Florida juried exhibition. This exhibit features the astonishing and multi-faceted talents of Florida artists whom live and work in Florida. The artwork is 2 and 3-dimensional with diverse subject matter and media. These Florida artists represent the very best talents Florida has to offer in many media. The opening of the exhibit is during First Friday on September 5th from 5:30 to 8:00pm. Visit with the artists at this opening reception and vote for the Viewer's Choice Award. The public is welcome.

Second Friday...

Art Gallery and Studio of Melbourne, 802 East New Haven Avenue, Downtown Melbourne, 321-729-9368. September's featured artist is Erin Terryn. Known for her large, dramatic abstract work, her pieces will be featured for the month. The public is invited to attend the opening reception for Erin from 6pm to 8pm during downtown Melbourne's FridayFest on September 12th, 2008, at the Art Gallery and Studio. Refreshments will be served.

Ongoing classes, exhibits, events, art information and news...


Exhibit: Come see the artwork of Pearl Ollie and Jerry Hanzl at Nor Roma's, the newest Italian restaurant in Rockledge, Florida, at 1253 Florida Avenue (321-690-6511). The lounge features several of Jerry's surreal digital visions and the dining area is adorned with Pearl's original paintings and the work of several of her students. All images are for sale. The restaurant plans to be open by August 13th for the dinner hours. Go by for an evening of fine Italian food and fine art.







Exhibit: Linda Graham has two acrylic paintings in the Imago Art Gallery "War and Peace" show which opened on Friday, August 8th. The titles of her paintings are "Next Year in Jerusalem" and "Party On!" The show will run for a month and all are invited to stop by to see it. Imago Art Gallery is located at 701 E. New Haven Avenue (upstairs) in Historic Downtown Melbourne.

Great Opportunity for Artists: Sevenartists.com is the newest creation from http://www.digitalartbyjerry.com/, local artist Jerry Hanzl. He is offering a free web page to local artists on http://www.sevenartists.com/, in an attempt to draw more attention to the great talent in our area. If you have an existing website, he will create a lead-in page from the site. If it is your only web presence, Jerry will give you a more involved page. His service is free and done in his spare time, donations are accepted. It is on a first-come, first-serve basis and subject to review. Email Jerry at jerryhanzl@yahoo.com and join the seven.

New Works: "Shoe Sale"... no, it's not a real shoe sale. Cindy Michaud has posted a series of small pastels you'll all want to see. They are all shoes... all sizes and colors, each with a story and each with free shipping. Check them out at http://www.cindymichaud.com/.

Tom and Vicki Busby are showing their collected works of 60's cultural icons at Yapa in Historic Downtown Melbourne. These large, colorful, up close and personal portraits bring the subjects and the viewers together in an almost intimate fashion. See Bob Dylan, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Ray Charles, Fidel Castro and others as you have never seen them before. Siri Lynn German 's 3-D and mixed media artwork are on exhibit in the small conference room at the Melbourne Beach Library from August 6th thru September 22nd. Be sure to stop by to see it. Call 255-1890 for information.




Loyd Behrendt's exhibit, "Birds of a Feather," combines photos of space launches and photos of birds in flight -- two entirely different types of flying machines. Have you seen the hand-colored prints of Lloyd Behrendt? They are on display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Behrendt's unique craft of making large format prints of his black and white photographs then hand-coloring them with transparent oil paints is definitely worth seeing. The Artists of Art and Antique Studio and Friends have a special exhibit of their works with the theme "Eau Gallie and More" at the Beachstreet Eatery, 302 Ocean Avenue, Melbourne Beach. The exhibit will run from July 17 through September 17, 2009. This popular local eatery, owned by Susie Daily, offers good eats and pleasant surroundings. Be sure to stop by to see the exhibit.

The Strawbridge Art League Landmarks III exhibit is touring the county. It is currently hanging in the FIT Library. Be sure to stop by to see it if you are in that area. This is the third in a series of exhibits depicting local landmarks. This is the final year of the exhibit and has resulted in the publication of a book of the award-winning pieces of art. photograph by Lori Knerick

Renee Decator's book, Road Trip, impressions of a memory is available. It is a compilation of artwork and stories inspired by a road trip she took last summer with her 86-year-old father and 18-year-old son. They went to the roots of her father's childhood in the mountains of West Virginia and Kentucky. The book contains 60 pages of art and stories. Pieces of 8: Hot off the press!! The Masters' Pieces, a compliation of well loved art as copied by The Pieces of 8, is now available for purchase. Sixteen master artists are chronicled with over 30-full color photographs of the paintings. The local women: Jini James, Carol Schiff, Denette Schweikert, Mary Warnick, Carmen Beecher, Suzanne Peiffer, Donna Vines, and Cindy Michaud set out to closely study the techniques and styles of the greatest of the great by copying their work. The resulting show has been exhibited several times as "Friends & Faux" and will appear once again in November 2008 at the Melbourne Beach Public Library. Lin Sons Graphite Classes: Graphite drawing classes are available on Friday mornings from 9:30 a.m to noon at the Art and Antique Studio, 1419 Highland Avenue, in historic Eau Gallie. It's the last week of the month. Don't miss out on seeing what's happening in August at the galleries.

Art and Antique Studio and Gallery “Cityscapes” Exhibit is on display throughout the month of August. Vicki Busby is the featured artist at the Art and Antique Studio and Gallery at 1419 Highland Avenue in Eau Gallie during August. Busby is an award-winning artist who has developed a unique impressionistic style. “Cityscapes” is an exhibit of her pastels and oils featuring images captured in dramatic light and bold colors. Busby has won many awards in several of the top 100 fine art shows in Florida. Don’t miss this wonderful exhibit. Her works will be on display throughout the month of August. Fifth Avenue Art Gallery "August Madness" Exhibition and Sale - The Fifth Avenue Art Gallery is featuring a 30-day Silent Auction of paintings, drawings, sculpture and art items. Art demonstrations by gallery members will be given every Saturday in August. The final artist demonstration is on August 30th at 10:00am. The show runs throughout August. The demonstrations and exhibition are free and open to the public. The Fifth Avenue Art Gallery is located at 1470 Highland Avenue, Melbourne, FL in the historic Eau Gallie area, across from the Brevard Art Museum. Brevard Art Museum: The 2008 Juried Exhibition will hang in the Brevard Art Museum through September 12, 2008. Dr. Jennifer Hardin, Chief Curator of the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg was the guest curator for the show. Be sure to stop by and see the works she chose for the exhibit.

Upcoming events and opportunities...

Upcoming in October: Start preparing those works on paper. The take-in for the juried exhibit called "PaperWorks" at the Strawbridge Art League is on October 18th. All works for this exhibit must be on paper or made of paper. Watch for more details in the near future.

Upcoming in October: Main Street Masters of Art. The festival is on Saturday and Sunday, October 4 and 5, 2008 in Historic Downtown Melbourne.

Upcoming in November: ArtWorks of EauGallie Festival is on Saturday and Sunday, November 22 and 23, 2008 on Highland Avenue in the Eau Gallie area of Melbourne. The committee is looking for volunteers. For information, go to http://www.artworksofeaugallie.org/

Meetings:

  • Brevard Porcelain Artists will begin their monthly meetings on the first Tuesday in September at the Salvation Army, Hickory Street, Melbourne. The meeting begins at 9:30 am and visitors are welcome. Contact: 321-255-3746.
  • Brevard Watercolor Society: The Brevard Watercolor Society meeting on the second Saturday of every month at 1:00pm at the Satellite Beach Civic Center, Cassia Blvd., Satellite Beach.
  • Central Brevard Art Association: Meetings of the Central Brevard Art Association are on the 1st Saturday of the month at 1:00p.m. at 566 Barton Blvd, Suite 3, Rockledge. There is no meeting in August.
  • Strawbridge Art League: The Strawbridge Art League usually meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:00pm in the ballroom of the Henegar Center for the Arts on New Haven Avenue, Melbourne. There will be no September meeting as the league is encouraging its members to attend "Fall into Art" on Highland Avenue in Eau Gallie on September 18. The downstairs hall gallery exhibit called "Snorkeling, Surfing, and Skivvies" begins August 26th. It will hang until October 5, 2008 in the Henegar Center for the Arts.
  • Titusville Art League: Meetings of the Titusville Art League are scheduled for the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6:45pm at 1421 Draa Road, Titusville.
