Fall for the Arts -- Fantastic

The First Annual Fall for the Arts Festival premiered the Brevard arts and cultural season on Thursday night. The fantastic street festival took place on Highland Avenue in the Eau Gallie Arts District. It was a celebration of the arts.

Congratulations to all involved, especially to the coordinating efforts of the Brevard Cultural Alliance (BCA). Their tireless work to make this event a success was evident. And kudos to the participants from all of the art and cultural groups, the coordinating committee, and to Link Johnson of EauGallie Florist.

People wandered from group to group and collected schedules of upcoming events, talked with artists, writers, dancers, musicians, and enjoyed food and drink. Over 40 organizations participated. Many of them performed for the public. It was a wonderful kick-off event to a new season of the arts.

The event was sponsored by the BCA, Florida's Space Coast, Florida Today, Eau Gallie Arts District, Sam's Club, Space Coast Living, and brandt ronat + co.

Thanks to all for a great event.

Sculpture needed: The BCA reports that a developer working on a plaza on Palm Bay Road is searching for outdoor sculpture to be installed as part of the project. Sculptors are asked to submit images of previous work, a bio and a conceptual design of a piece that they would create for the project.

When asked their opinion on public art at Hammock Landing, the Planning and Zoning Board expressed that they would like to see fountain art, bronze statues (or another material), something fun, or art that represents the area.

The budget is approximately $5,000 per piece. They will be choosing 5 to 7 pieces per project.

For more information, contact Lynne Brezina at Brevard Cultural Alliance 321-690-6817.

Read about her: Carol L. Taylor is featured in "Brevard Artists Venture Outside the Space Coast" in the travel section of the September 2008 issue of Space Coast Living. Artwork welcome. The Space Coast Cancer Center is asking artists to participate in the Annual Daffodil Gala Silent Auction on Saturday, October 13th, 2008. Artists may donate a piece of artwork or place a piece on consignment. For consignment, artists will determine what they must have from the piece. If the piece brings in more than what the artist is asking, the Space coast Medical Associates Foundation will receive the overage as a donation. The foundation is dedicated to helping all who need a helping hand in the fight against cancer. They provide financial assistance for medications, transportation, housing, counseling for individuals with cancer, and educational scholarships for healthcare providers.

Artwork must be brought to the BCA office by October 10th. Artwork will be picked up by a Cancer Center representative.

Books

Congratulations to Lori Knerick. In a recent meeting of The Scribblers of Brevard - a writers' group that meets at the Eau Gallie library twice a month - Lori Knerick's altered photograph "A Bright Voyage" was chosen for the cover of Driftwood (an anthology of poetry, short stories and art). The photograph captures a solitary duck and small sailboat with sails at rest in a peaceful, yet vivid harbor.

Renee Decator's book, Road Trip, impressions of a memory is available. It is a compilation of artwork and stories inspired by a road trip she took last summer with her 86-year-old father and 18-year-old son. They went to the roots of her father's childhood in the mountains of West Virginia and Kentucky. The book contains 60 pages of art and stories. It can be purchased at the Fifth Avenue Art Gallery in Eau Gallie or at her website: http://www.shop.reneedecator.com/ or if you are local, you can purchase it directly from the artist by emailing her at decatjr@aol.com.

Pieces of 8: Hot off the press!! The Masters' Pieces, a compilation of well-loved art as copied by The Pieces of 8, is now available for purchase. Sixteen master artists are chronicled with over 30-full color photographs of the paintings. The local women: Jini James, Carol Schiff, Denette Schweikert, Mary Warnick, Carmen Beecher, Suzanne Peiffer, Donna Vines, and Cindy Michaud set out to closely study the techniques and styles of the greatest of the great by copying their work. The resulting show has been exhibited several times as "Friends and Faux" and will appear once again in November 2008 at the Melbourne Beach Public Library. A great gift for an art lover or someone just learning about the masters, the book is only $14.00 and can be ordered by going to http://www.piecesof8.net and clicking on the small copy of the book.
